Guimarães is called the “cradle city” due to having been the first capital when Portugal was founded, in 1143. The historic center of Guimarães, an area that was within the walls, was classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001, based on the values of originality and authenticity with which it was recovered. It was also the European Capital of Culture in 2012.

This tour will start at the Castelo de Guimarães, a medieval castle built in the 10th century and strongly linked to the foundation of Portugal, heading to the Paço dos Duques de Bragança, built in the 15th century which is today the Official Residence of the President of the Republic in the North. It continues to the historic center passing by Santa Clara Convent, São Tiago Square, Largo, and Nossa Senhora da Oliveira Church, ending at Nossa Senhora da Consolação and Santos Passos Church (also known as Igreja de Saint Gualter).

As one of the most important cities in Minho, we cannot leave out the gastronomic suggestions. The highlights are the Roasted Cod, the Pica no Chão Rice (Cabidela) and also the convent sweets Toucinho do Céu and the Tortas de Guimarães, which you can enjoy in typical restaurants in the city such as the Restaurant Formigas.
